Platform Architect
IT
Role: Platform Architect
Reports to: Brian Crawford, Vice President of Academics and Digital Evangelism
Location: Chosen People Ministries Headquarters, New York, NY (on-site)
Salary: $100,000 per year
Benefits: Housing provided in NYC for 12 months (renegotiable at end of term); health and retirement benefits; paid vacation and ministry holidays; professional development opportunities; flexible work arrangements
What We Are Building
Chosen People Ministries operates a substantial and growing digital footprint: numerous WordPress websites, custom-built web applications, a highly customized FileMaker database, podcasts, email marketing, social media, and online education platforms serving more than twenty countries. As the ministry’s digital reach has expanded, so has the opportunity for dedicated technical leadership to unify and strengthen it.
The Platform Architect is CPM’s first senior technical hire and will be accountable for the health of this entire ecosystem. The role begins with a comprehensive audit of everything we operate, followed by a phased plan to remove redundancies, increase interoperability, streamline maintenance, and establish enduring engineering standards, security practices, and vendor policies. The goal is a focused, well-integrated set of systems that serve the ministry for the next decade.
The Architect will work closely with senior leadership to ensure technology advances the mission of praying for, evangelizing, discipling, and serving Jewish people worldwide.
What You Will Do
Audit & Rationalization (First Priority)
- Conduct a complete inventory and audit of all CPM digital properties: websites, hosting accounts, domains, codebases, databases, vendor contracts, credentials, and data flows
- Assess each of CPM’s WordPress sites; recommend which to consolidate, redesign, or retire, and assign clear internal ownership for every property going forward
- Consolidate and document CPM’s ownership of all source code, accounts, and infrastructure credentials; establish a standing policy that CPM retains full ownership of all code and systems built on its behalf, and apply it to all vendor and contractor agreements
- Assess CPM’s custom-built web applications across code quality, security, UI/UX, and deployment practices; chart a path to modernize, rebuild, or retire each based on findings
- Audit the FileMaker database and its customizations; evaluate whether CPM’s long-term interests are best served by extending FileMaker or planning a next-generation migration, and present that recommendation to leadership for a joint decision
Web Platform Strategy & Engineering
- Design and implement a consolidation strategy for CPM’s web presence (WordPress multisite with shared plugins/themes, custom React front-ends on a shared Node/Deno backend, or a hybrid) based on audit findings
- Establish modern engineering practices across all properties: version control, code review, staging environments, CI/CD pipelines, and documentation
- Perform hands-on development and remediation work where needed; advise on hiring consultants for multiplying effectiveness
Identity & Donor Portal
- Design and implement a single sign-on / identity strategy across CPM’s public-facing properties
- Architect and deliver a secure donor portal that integrates with the donor database (currently FileMaker) through a hardened API layer, giving donors self-service access to their giving history and statements
Data & Integration
- Build a deliberate integration layer of well-defined APIs and data contracts between systems
- Apply least-privilege access, and keep sensitive data (donor financial records, personal information) intentionally segmented or isolated where that is the safer design
- Deliver dashboards and reporting for leadership from the systems of record
- Establish data governance, privacy, and retention standards appropriate to donor data and international operations
- Evaluate practical, cost-effective uses of AI, automation, and analytics for fundraising and ministry engagement
Cybersecurity & Risk Management
- Work with our security consultants to harden and secure all CPM properties and infrastructure, applying OWASP best practices, secrets management, patching discipline, and access controls
- Assist the consultants in developing cybersecurity policies and incident response procedures
- Oversee backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning
- Ensure compliance with applicable privacy and nonprofit regulations in the U.S. and abroad
Leadership & Vendor Management
- Serve as strategic technology advisor to executive leadership; translate technical trade-offs into plain language for non-technical decision-makers
- Lead vendor and consultant selection and contract oversight, including code-ownership, data-ownership, and exit clauses in every agreement
- Exercise technology governance over staff projects: new websites, applications, integrations, and technology vendors will be approved by the Architect
- Mentor CPM staff and raise the ministry’s overall technical capability
- Build a culture of documentation so institutional knowledge is preserved and shared
Out of Scope
- End user IT support, device management, and help desk are outside the scope of this role
What We Need
Required:
- 10+ years of web and platform development—Including full-stack development and several years of architecture-level or technical-leadership responsibility.
- Modernization experience—You have led modernization or migration initiatives from legacy systems.
- WordPress at scale—Multisite, plugin and theme development.
- Modern stack—Hands-on proficiency with React, Node or Deno, SQL, and REST API design.
- Engineering practices—CI/CD pipelines, Git-based workflows, and at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
- Security—Web application security and OWASP best practices.
- Identity and authentication—OAuth 2.0, OIDC, and/or SAML for single sign-on and portal work.
- Education—Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Highly Beneficial:
- Experience with nonprofit technology, donor systems, or CRM platforms
- FileMaker experience
Who You Are
Spiritually:
- Mature believer with a close walk with the Lord
- Heart for missions and evangelism, especially reaching Jewish people
- Active in a local church/congregation
- High moral character and integrity as outlined in Scripture
- Aligned with our doctrinal statement
Professionally:
- Pragmatic architect who right-sizes solutions to a nonprofit’s budget and staff capacity
- Comfortable writing code, negotiating with vendors, and briefing senior leadership
- Collaborative servant leader with excellent communication skills
- Able to translate technical concepts for non-technical leaders
What Success Looks Like
The milestones below describe the expected shape of the first two years. Specific goals and timelines will be refined jointly with the Architect once the initial audit is complete.
- First 90 Days: Audit—Complete the full audit of systems, codebases, contracts, credentials, and security posture; consolidate documentation and ownership of all source code and accounts; deliver a prioritized plan and recommendations to leadership.
- First Year: Strengthen & Architect—Implement priority security enhancements; build the digital library; consolidate or retire underutilized websites; establish version control, CI/CD, and engineering standards; deliver the FileMaker recommendation; complete the design of the donor portal and single sign-on architecture.
- First 24 Months: Modernize—Launch the donor portal with secure database integration; roll out single sign-on across active properties; substantially complete website consolidation and library rollout; execute or begin the agreed next-generation database plan; deliver improved fundraising and ministry reporting to leadership.
The successful candidate will be both a strategic architect and a practical implementer: capable of thoughtfully assessing a diverse digital ecosystem, then unifying and modernizing it in realistic, well-sequenced phases that enable Chosen People Ministries to grow its global ministry impact over the next decade.
